This year, the London Short Film Festival is seeking to commission five emerging and early-career writers to respond to our 2024 programme.

Each selected writer will be granted complimentary tickets to LSFF programmed events and paid a nominal fee for their response, which can be focussed on any of the events or shorts featured across this year’s festival. LSFF will also showcase the critics’ responses on our website and social media channels in the coming months.

HOW TO APPLY

To be considered for this opportunity, please submit the following:

  • A short statement of motivation (300 words max) - outlining your interests (cinematic or otherwise), what you enjoy (and what you don’t!) about film and film criticism, and why the LSFF 2024 programme appeals to you (indicating TWO of the programmed events you would most like to attend).
  • A short writing sample (500 words max) on any subject - if your sample has been published online, you can send us the link.
  • Please email your statement and writing sample - along with your full name and contact details - using the subject line ‘LSFF 2024 Critics Open Call Application (YOUR NAME)’ to info@shortfilms.org.uk.

ELIGIBILITY

We hope to reach new audiences, expand our networks and provide more opportunities to those based outside of London in future. However, given the locations of this year’s partner venues, you must either be based in London or able to travel to the partner venues in London for the programmed events.

We are defining ‘emerging and early-career’ as ‘having received paid commissions for no more than five written pieces in print or online’.

We want to ensure this opportunity is as accessible as we can make it. If you require any reasonable adjustments or additional support to apply - and, if successful, to engage with our programme - please do let us know.
